How To Hold Your Yarn

When crocheting, the yarn is usually held in your non-dominant hand (the hand not holding the hook). The goal is to guide the yarn smoothly while keeping a comfortable tension.

A common method is:

Let the yarn run over your index finger

Wrap it lightly around your fingers to control it

Hold your work with your thumb and middle finger

There isn’t just one “correct” way — the best method is the one that feels comfortable and gives you control.

Why is this important?

How you hold your yarn affects your tension, which is how tight or loose your stitches are.

Good yarn control helps you:

Keep stitches even and neat

Make crocheting smoother and faster

Avoid hand strain

Follow patterns more accurately
